Join the Night Watchmen Through Festively Decorated Aabenraa
As darkness falls in December, follow Aabenraa's night watchmen through the town's cobbled streets. Dressed in their traditional uniforms and carrying morning stars and lanterns, they take you on a historical walking tour where stories from the past meet the Christmas spirit of the old market town.
On three Wednesdays in December, the night watchmen invite you to join special Christmas tours. Along the way, you'll hear about Aabenraa's history, its notable personalities, colourful characters and the events that have shaped the town over the centuries.
There might even be a Christmas story or two about festive celebrations in Aabenraa in days gone by!
Traditional Watchman Songs, Lanterns and Stories from the Past
From the 17th to the 19th century, night watchmen served as the town's night police, keeping watch over Aabenraa and its residents after dark.
During the Christmas Night Watchman Tour, the watchmen share stories about their historical duties and everyday life in the old market town. Along the way, they sing traditional watchman verses, bringing the history of Aabenraa to life.
You'll also discover the stories behind the town's historic buildings and their distinctive architecture.
Christmas Atmosphere in Aabenraa's Historic Streets
The tour takes you through the old town, where festive lights illuminate the squares and the windows of charming old houses glow, creating a magical setting for the evening's stories.
Enjoy the beautifully decorated streets as the night watchmen share anecdotes about the people who once lived and worked in Aabenraa.
The Christmas Night Watchman Tour is particularly suited to adults who would like to combine a historical walking tour with an evening in festively decorated Aabenraa. However, children are also very welcome.

The Christmas Night Watchman Tours take place on three Wednesdays in December 2026:
Wednesday, 2 December at 19:00
Wednesday, 9 December at 19:00
Wednesday, 16 December at 19:00
Duration: Approx. 1.5 hours
Meeting point: Vægterpladsen in Aabenraa.
Children under 12: Free admission.
Places are limited on each tour, and tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
