Discover Triton’s Reef beneath the surface

Close to Sønderborg Slot (Castle), you’ll find Triton’s Reef, an artificial reef created for educational purposes, where you can explore beneath the surface with a snorkel or diving equipment.

The reef was established by the Als Stenrev association in 2016, followed by an underwater trail in 2017. Suitable for both beginners and experienced snorkellers, it offers the chance to discover life beneath the surface.

The reef consists of 800 m³ of rocks arranged in several smaller formations, extending from a depth of around 1 metre to 12 metres. Small spaces between the rocks provide places to explore, and along the way you may spot algae, fish, crustaceans and molluscs.

At the reef, you’ll find an information board as well as a marked snorkelling route with information panels beneath the water.

Practical information

During the summer, it can be difficult to find parking close to the dive site due to the number of visitors to the beach. After unloading your equipment, you may therefore need to park at Slotskajen, approximately 500 metres from the beach. Parking here is limited to four hours.

Underwater hunting is not permitted in the area.

Permits: Underwater hunting prohibited.

Dangerous areas: Avoid diving/snorkelling beyond the last reef due to sailing traffic. Use surface markers.

Parking: Parking spaces at the ice cream parlour by the road, 50 metres from the water's edge.

Accommodation: Hotel Sønderborg Strand. Sønderborg By & Strand Camping.

Toilet: There are toilets by the ice cream parlour.

In and out of the water: The route to the reef begins 50 metres east of the bathing jetty along the beach. Equipment can be prepared on the grass between the car park and the beach. Diving at Trittons Rev is a pure shore dive where you dive from the beach.

Diving routes: At the beach, the start of the route is marked by a large rock (the Welcome Stone) from where you dive south-southwest and follow the row of small reefs (1–4 metres deep) all the way out to the large reefs (5–12 metres deep). In addition to reefs, there may be eelgrass and sandy bottoms in the area.
