Go on a treasure hunt

The treasure hunt in Gådefulde Malerier is for anyone up for an adventure. No prior knowledge is required to take part. Although familiarity with the Sønderborg area might give you a head start in solving the riddles, it is not essential to join in.

The treasure hunt begins at the exhibition.

Here, you must solve the riddles in the paintings using six verses in Danish. However, it is not revealed in advance which verse belongs to which painting – figuring this out for yourself is part of the challenge.

How the treasure hunt works:

Study the six paintings: Visit the exhibition and interpret the works.
Match the verses: Read the six verses and work out which paintings they relate to.
Find the location: Follow the clues to the area where you think the treasure is hidden.
Search the area: Upon arrival, look for a special sign bearing the Sønderborg Municipality logo, which marks the permitted digging area.
Find the key: Dig in exactly the right spot and find the treasure chest containing a key.
Claim your prize: The key is proof that the riddle has been solved. Register your discovery of the key via the project’s website. You will then be presented with the actual prize – what the treasure is remains a surprise, revealed only to the finder.

You must have visited the exhibition before it closes on 1 November, but you can continue the treasure hunt itself until all six treasures have been found – even after the exhibition has ended. All treasures are buried within the boundaries of Sønderborg municipality.
