Lecture: The White Buses

On April 30, 2025, you can learn about one of Denmark’s greatest humanitarian rescue missions: The White Buses and the quarantine station in Padborg.

On May 4, 2025, it will be 80 years since Denmark was liberated from the Nazi regime. In this context, a lecture will be held at Aabenraa Library.

Aabenraa Library at Folkehjem in Aabenraa will host historian and museum curator Gry Scavenius Bertelsen from the Frøslev Camp Museum and the Freedom Museum’s Collection & Archives.

Here, you will hear about one of Denmark’s greatest humanitarian rescue operations. It is the story of the iconic White Buses, which courageously and strategically drove through war-torn Germany in a carefully planned effort. A mission that had already begun in secrecy long before World War II came to an end in 1945.

It is the story of the Danish heroes who risked their lives to save thousands of prisoners from the Nazi camps. You will also learn about the quarantine station in Padborg, which became the first place of respite for the freed prisoners returning to Denmark.
